What Is a Double Chin?
A double chin can significantly impact self-confidence, as it often gives the impression of being overweight or being older. However, it is possible to have a double chin even if you’re at a healthy weight and many people struggle to eliminate a double chin despite regular exercise and a balanced diet.
What Can Cause a Double Chin?
Double Chins, also commonly known as Submental Fullness can be caused by several factors:
- Ageing: As we age, fat distribution tends to change in the body. Even if your overall body weight is ‘normal’, you may experience an increase in fat under the chin while losing fat in other areas.
- Genetics: Some individuals have a genetic predisposition to accumulate fat beneath the chin, regardless of their overall body weight.
- Weight Gain: Gaining weight can lead to the accumulation of fat in various areas, including under the chin, resulting in a double chin.
- Platysmus Bands of the Neck: These bands may give the impression of a double chin but this is due to overactivity of the muscular tendons and muscle relaxing treatments to these bands can be done to reduce the pulling down effect.

How is a Double Chin Treated?
Fortunately, there are various methods available to help reduce or even eliminate double chins.
At Cosmetic & Veins Clinic, we offer Belkyra®, which is an injectable solution specifically designed to eliminate fat cells beneath the chin.
Belkyra® is administered to the fat beneath the chin to enhance your jawline and minimise the appearance of a double chin. This treatment is ideal for moderate to severe double chins resulting from genetic factors, ageing, or weight gain. However, it is not effective for double chins caused by a loss of skin elasticity or muscle excess.
Typically, at least two sessions are required, with each session spaced eight weeks apart. On average, patients undergo three to four treatments, but up to six may be necessary.
While the reduction of fat cells is permanent, factors such as skin ageing, fluctuations in weight, and sun exposure can influence the long-term appearance of the double chin area.
