IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy

At Cosmetic & Veins Clinic, we offer IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments specifically designed to target a range of skin concerns, including pigmentation, sun damage, uneven texture and tone.

With advanced technology and expert clinical care, our team is here to help you achieve clearer, healthier-looking skin.

What Is IPL Treatment & How Does It Work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is a non-invasive therapy that utilises light-based technology to target pigmentation issues, including sun damage, age spots, broken capillaries, and rosacea. This treatment is a safe way to refresh your skin by stimulating collagen production, reducing pigmentation and redness.

IPL works by delivering multiple wavelengths in pulses that are absorbed by the skin’s different chromophores (melanin or haemoglobin). Depending on the condition and area being treated, a cold gel is applied to the skin, and the light then targets melanin (a pigment) or haemoglobin (redness within vessels). Initially, these chromophores may appear darker, but over time, your body will naturally remove those cells, resulting in clearer and smoother skin.

Repeat treatments may be required, as not all treatments will guarantee results due to individual differences in pigmentation and the underlying causes of redness. This will be explained during your consultation.

What IPL Treatments Can Help With?

Is IPL Treatment Right for You?

While IPL is considered a safe and effective option for many, it might not be the right treatment for you. Before booking an IPL treatment, it’s essential to consult with our team to determine if you’re a suitable candidate or whether another treatment, such as our resurfacing or vascular laser, may be more ideal for your needs.

Certain medications, including antidepressants, acne medication (Roaccutane or Retin-A), and antibiotics, may put you at a higher risk of burning and hyperpigmentation. Therefore, the treatment is therefore not recommended.

Darker skin tones naturally have more melanin, which can make IPL treatments riskier, increasing the chance of hyperpigmentation, burns, or scarring. In such cases, alternative treatments would be recommended.

A professional consultation with our team will help determine the best option for you and your skin.

Before Your Treatment

For optimal results, it’s recommended to:

  • Refrain from sun exposure or fake tans for at least two weeks
  • Please avoid topical treatments or retinoid creams for two weeks prior to your appointment
  • Arrive at your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin
  • Wear SPF30 every day for four weeks in the lead up to your appointment

After Your Treatment

After your IPL appointment, you may experience symptoms such as some redness, heat, swelling or welting. It is recommended that you follow these instructions to aid the healing process:

  • Immediately after your treatment, you may want to apply a cold pack or gel to help reduce swelling
  • Avoid scratching or picking at healing areas
  • After your treatment, it is very important to stay out of the sun and avoid tanning for at least one week
  • Skip hot showers, saunas, and hot pools or swimming pools for 24 – 48 hours
  • For a few days, apply a gentle moisturiser (aloe-based) to keep your skin hydrated
  •
