Melasma

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by symmetrical, brownish patches on the face. Frequently impacted regions comprise the face, such as the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead, as well as the forearms.

What Causes Melasma?

Melasma is generally caused by exposure to various types of radiation; UV, visible light, and infrared (heat) light, as well as hormonal factors.

Here are key contributors to the development of melasma:

  • Exposure to Sunlight & Heat: Ultraviolet and infrared rays from the sun significantly worsen melasma.
  • Hormonal Changes: Elevated levels of hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone are closely linked with melasma.
  • Pregnancy: Known as the mask of pregnancy, melasma often occurs due to increased levels of oestrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormones during the third trimester.
  • Genetics: There is a significant genetic component to melasma, with 33% to 50% of people with the condition reporting a family history of it.

Melasma Treatments & Medications

  • Q-Switch Laser Treatment: The Q-Switch Laser treatment is a non-invasive laser treatment designed to address skin pigmentation issues, such as freckles and sunspots. By emitting brief, high-intensity pulses of light, this laser specifically targets melanin, the pigment responsible for these discolourations.
  • Topical Ointments: Commonly used topical treatments include hydroquinone, tretinoin, and corticosteroids.
