Moles/Skin Tags
What Are Moles and Skin Tags?
Numerous common and harmless skin lesions exist, including moles, freckles, skin tags, liver spots (benign lentigines) and seborrheic keratoses.
Types of Moles and Skin Tags
When it comes to skin growths, the most crucial distinction is whether they are benign (harmless) or show malignant features that indicate cancer. One of our specifically-trained doctors evaluates all moles before proceeding with any treatment and a biopsy may be necessary if there are any concerning signs.
Skin tags, on the other hand, are almost always benign and generally pose cosmetic or functional concerns rather than health risks.
Here are some common types of skin lesions:
- Moles: These are typically brown and circular, and can be flat or raised with uniform or irregular pigmentation. Any recent changes should be examined by a doctor using a dermatoscope to rule out melanoma (a serious type of skin cancer).
- Skin Tags: Fleshy growths that usually appear on a stalk. They are commonly found around the underarms, neck, under breasts, or in the groin area.
- Seborrhoeic Keratoses: Warty-looking lesions that are generally brown. They are soft and can break off if scratched. These are common in people over 35.
- Actinic Keratoses: Hard, scaly patches that appear on sun-exposed areas. The scale can be picked off but will regrow and can potentially develop into skin cancer over time.
- Raised Lesions: Any growth that is elevated above the skin surface is considered a skin lesion. While most are harmless, some can be cancerous and should be evaluated by a doctor.

Symptoms
Typically, benign moles don’t cause any symptoms. If you notice any changes or discomfort with your mole, it’s advisable to consult a GP with expertise in skin cancer, or a dermatologist. Skin tags generally don’t cause symptoms either but may become irritated due to friction.
Moles and Skin Tag Treatments
At the Cosmetic & Veins Clinic, benign moles and skin tags without indications of skin cancer can be removed using a non-surgical technique known as Surgitron.
Surgitron is a minimally invasive procedure for removing skin tags and moles without causing bleeding or requiring stitches; providing a scar-free option for eliminating cosmetic lumps and bumps on the face and body.
If a lesion looks suspicious one of our trained Doctors can advise on the best course of action and if required we take biopsies to assist in further diagnosis.
At this stage, we are NOT providing a mole checking or screening service. Please see your own GP or a dermatologist offering this service.
To determine the most suitable treatment for you, we recommend that you book a consultation with one of our experienced medical professionals at Cosmetic & Veins Clinic.
