What is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency Ablation for Varicose Veins
When blood circulates through the body, it travels from the legs back to the heart via the veins. Within these veins, one-way valves ensure proper blood flow. However, when these valves malfunction, blood starts to accumulate in the legs, causing the veins to enlarge, change colour, and the surrounding area to swell and ache. This condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency or varicose veins.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for varicose veins involves closing or ‘ablating’ the problematic vein, which enhances blood circulation and alleviates the pain and swelling associated with varicose veins.
RFA for chronic venous insufficiency employs an innovative technique where a catheter (a slender tube) is inserted into the defective vein. Once the vein is numbed, it is heated to seal it shut. After the vein is closed, the body gradually absorbs it over several months. Consequently, blood flow is rerouted through deeper, more efficient veins, resulting in an improved venous system and relief from varicose vein symptoms such as aching, throbbing, and heavy, swollen legs.
